Good news for the players, but also good news for all live tennis enthusiasts who are at loggerheads with the nights they have been through: The ITF has an understanding of the physically challenged athletes at the Olympic tennis tournament in Tokyo July 29th, a later game start every day. The officials are reacting to the extremely high temperatures currently prevailing in the Japanese metropolis.
If the courts in the Ariake Tennis Park were previously played from 11:00 a.m. local time (4:00 a.m. CEST), from tomorrow the players will not use their equipment until 15:00 (8:00 a.m. CEST). The International Tennis Federation commented on the subject in a press release as follows: "After extensive deliberations and in the spirit of keeping the health and well-being of the players at the center of our decisions, the ITF has, due to the increasing heat and humidity currently in Tokyo, Japan rules, made a change to the schedule. "
The extreme weather guidelines for the Olympic tennis tournament provide for changes to the course of the game from a threshold of 30.1 degrees Celsius. From this temperature, if requested, a ten-minute break between sets two and three is granted. In the doubles and mixed competitions, however, this option is not available, as the third round at the Olympics is held in the champions tie-break.
