The Japanese gold hope Naomi Osaka is still sovereign at the Olympic Games. The four-time Grand Slam winner in tennis, who lit the Olympic flame on Friday, clearly prevailed on Monday in the second round 6: 3, 6: 2 against Wimbledon quarter-finalist Viktoria Golubic from Switzerland. Osaka's round of 16 opponents determine Mihaela Buzarnescu (Romania) and Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic).

Osaka is contesting the first tournament in her home country after an almost two-month break, which she had put in as a result of her noisy withdrawal from the French Open. The 23-year-old has repeatedly struggled with depression. "I definitely feel a little fresher and happy again," she said after her first match in Tokyo.

Osaka is particularly strong on hard court

After Wimbledon winner Ashleigh Barty was surprisingly eliminated from the first round, Osaka, second in the world rankings, is the big favorite for gold. She won all of her four Grand Slam titles on the hard court, which is also the surface that is played in the Ariake Tennis Park.

The two-time major winner Garbine Muguruza is also already in the round of 16. The Spaniard beat Qiang Wang from China 6-3 and 6-0. French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova had no problems in 6: 2 and 6: 4 against Leylah Fernandez from Canada, as did Maria Sakkari in 6: 1 and 6: 2 against Nina Stojanovic.
