If you go by the seed list, Elina Svitolina should be the first contender for gold in Tokyo 2020. Svitolina is ranked fourth, leaving a sovereign impression in the 6: 4 and 6: 4 against Camila Giorgi. In the semifinals, however, she will meet a player who not only took Naomi Osaka out of the competition, but was also able to save energy on Wednesday: Marketa Vondrousova only had to stand for one set against Paula Badosa, then the Spaniard gave up.

The second semi-final game will be played by Belinda Bencic and Elena Rybakina. The latter ended the second Spanish dream of individual gold in Tokyo with a 7: 5 and 6: 1 against Garbine Muguruza. Bencic, on the other hand, who has played very little tennis this year due to injury concerns, prevailed against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6: 0, 3: 6 and 6: 3.

Tournament favorite Ashleigh Barty had already failed in round one due to Sara Sorribe's Tormo, and Aryna Sabalenka (against Donna Vekic) and Iga Swiatek, the 2020 French Open winner, had to say goodbye.
