After the second set of their round of 16 match in Tokyo, Daniil Medvedev and Fabio Fognini took a longer break. After Medvedev had won the first set, the Italian made a surprising comeback in the second round. That, however, swallowed up a lot of strength in him and his opponent. The much younger Russian seemed to be more concerned about the substance than Fognini.

After returning to the center court, however, the favorite prevailed: Daniil Medvedev won 6: 2, 3: 6 and 6: 2. Fognini could not make up an early deficit and missed several break chances for a possible comeback in the seventh game. Then he gave up his serve again and ended the match with a double fault.

The next opponent of the world number two Medvedev will be Pablo Carreno Busta. The Spaniard won his round of 16 after a tight first set against Dominik Koepfer 7: 6 (7) and 6: 3. This makes Alexander Zverev the last remaining German in the individual tableau. Zverev will face Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia later on Wednesday.
