The 34-year-old Scot, who triumphed in both London in 2012 and Rio in 2016, withdrew from the singles competition in Tokyo due to a strain in his thigh. This was announced by the British delegation on Sunday just before Murray's first round match against the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
In doubles, however, Murray will continue to serve with his partner Joe Salisbury. There the duo will meet two-time French Open champion Kevin Krawietz (Coburg) and Tim Pütz (Frankfurt / Main) in the round of 16.
"I'm really disappointed to have to retire, but the medical staff advised me not to play in both events," said three-time Grand Slam winner Murray, who had suffered from serious hip injuries in recent years.
