The 33-year-old from Metzingen had to admit defeat to the clearly favored Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (No. 4) after 3:06 hours with 3: 6, 7: 5, 4: 6 on Sunday.

Siegemund was visibly troubled by the heat and the high humidity in the blazing afternoon sun. Again and again, exhausted, she cooled her forehead with an ice pack between changing sides. In addition, she had to have her back treated in the third set, but Siegemund continued to fight bravely even when she was 5-1 down. Siegemund even had breakball to make it 5: 5, but forgave it lightly on a second serve.

This means that of three German women who started in the singles, only Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied) is in the second round. Siegemund and Friedsam had already failed in doubles and Mona Barthel (Neumünster) in singles on Saturday because of their opening hurdles.
