The tennis competition at the Olympic Games 2021 could not look forward to particularly positive publicity in advance. Most of the news about the industry competition at the world's largest sporting event, it dealt with the veritable flood of cancellations that were spread by players on social networks.
The two most recent cancellations concern top stars again, on Thursday both Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka from Belarus announced that they did not want to travel to Japan. "I would like to inform everyone that I made the very difficult decision not to play in the Tokyo Olympics," said Azarenka on Instagram.
Paris 2024 the goal
According to Azarenka, she has a lot of great memories of the Olympic Games, with the "challenges that come with the pandemic", but she knows deeply in her heart that this is the best decision for herself and her team. "I'm already looking forward to returning to the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 and representing Belarus," said the 31-year-old.
With Azarenka, Tokyo will be missing a former gold medalist at the Olympic Games. In 2012 the Belarusian played an excellent tournament in London, won bronze in singles and was crowned Olympic champion in mixed doubles alongside Max Mirny. In the final, the duo got the upper hand against Andy Murray and Laura Robson.
