Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2023: "We have a stronger field than a Grand Slam tournament"

Grand Slam level at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix: Led by world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland, nine players from the top 10 and 17 from the top 20 in the world rankings will be at the start in the Porsche Arena from April 15th to 23rd. A colorful supporting program with numerous innovations underlines the attractiveness of the traditional event. The countdown to the 46th edition began on Thursday with a press conference in the newly opened Porsche Brand Store in Stuttgart's Dorotheen Quarter.

In addition to defending champion Iga Swiatek, her final opponent from last year will also be in the Porsche Arena: Aryna Sabalenka, number 2 in the world, is coming to Stuttgart as the current Australian Open winner. Two former Stuttgart winners are also back: The Czechs Karolina Pliskova (2018) and Petra Kvitova (2019) have been among the crowd favorites in the Porsche Arena for years

Thanks to a wild card, Tatjana Maria and Jule Niemeier, currently the best German players, are right in the main draw. As a former Grand Slam winner, Porsche Brand Ambassador Emma Raducanu (Great Britain/US Open 2021) will receive a so-called top 20 wildcard. A total of seven Grand Slam winners will serve in the Porsche Arena. A Neptune blue Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo awaits the winner of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix as the electrifying main prize.

"We are stronger than a Grand Slam tournament"

"This year, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix once again fulfills our aim of presenting the spectators in the Porsche Arena with the best players in the world," said tournament director Markus Günthardt at the press conference in the Porsche Brand Store in Stuttgart. “In principle, we are even stronger than a Grand Slam tournament. With us, the number 10 in the world is not seeded, so it can meet number 5 in the first round. There is no other tournament like that.”

"It's a huge compliment for our tournament and the spectators in the Porsche Arena that we have so many top international stars with us again," added Anke Huber, Sport Director. "As a tournament in Germany, we also have a responsibility for German players and youngsters. That's why Jule Niemeier received a wildcard for the main draw and Noma Noha Akugue from the Porsche Talent Team for our strong qualifying session, where she can gain important experience for her future career. With another qualifying wildcard, we are giving Sabine Lisicki the opportunity to return to the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix stage after many years, which were not always easy for her from a sporting point of view.”

“The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is a highlight of the international tennis season. And for us, in a figurative sense, the 911 in sports sponsorship,” said Sebastian Rudolph, Head of Public Relations, Press, Sustainability and Politics at Porsche AG, in front of numerous media representatives in the Porsche Brand Store. With this comparison to the sports car icon, he underlined the importance of the traditional tournament for the sports car manufacturer. “The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix has been one of the sporting and social highlights in the Stuttgart region for more than 40 years and radiates sporting class all over the world. In addition, we are once again providing an impetus for social responsibility. With the campaign 'Asse für Charity' we will donate money to people who are in need through no fault of their own.”

"Aces for Charity": Help for Ukraine

With the “Aces for Charity” campaign, Porsche traditionally supports the work of non-profit organizations as part of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. This time it is all about “75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars”. On the occasion of the anniversary and based on the first Porsche 356, the sports car manufacturer is donating 356 euros for every ace beaten in the course of the tournament. The amount donated goes equally to the Agapedia Foundation, the State Sports Association of Baden-Württemberg and the Ferry Porsche Foundation. The funds are used to support Ukraine Aid projects.

Exciting premiere: Racket Sports World

As part of the supporting program of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, visitors will experience an exciting premiere: The Racket Sports World is a festival of racket sports and offers a hands-on and adventure program for tennis, padel, table tennis, badminton and touch tennis. Sporting highlights in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle are the Yonex One Tennis-Point Grand Prix, the international badminton match between Germany and the Ukraine and the first German championship in touch tennis.

In the newly designed Porsche World in the entrance area, visitors can experience the history of the Porsche brand and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Autograph sessions with the stars and hands-on activities for young and old are again part of the attractive supporting programme. The performance of the Stuttgart Ballet promises a treat for the senses: the world-famous company gets the audience in the mood for the finale with a performance on Center Court.

"I think it's extremely important to offer our visitors a varied supporting program for the whole family in addition to top-class tennis," says Markus Günthardt. "With attractive offers away from the courts, we want to create the conditions for our guests to be willing to stay with us for a long time. And with Racket Sports World, we address everyone who is interested in racquet sports.”

For the first time, a piece of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix will also be brought to downtown Stuttgart. There is an activation area in the Porsche Brand Store and also in the Dorotheen Quarter until the start of the tournament. The outdoor area features a bar and music from Thursday to Saturday.
