Porsche Tennis Grand Prix: Ash Barty rolls over Siegemund, Kenin fails due to continuity

Laura Siegemund suffered a bitter defeat at the home tournament in Stuttgart on Wednesday evening. The Filderstadt native lost in the round of 16 of the WTA 500 event to world number one Ash Barty with 0: 6 and 5: 7. With Sofia Kenin , the number three of the tournament failed surprisingly.

The first two points in the clash with the world number one, the big title favorite, the 2019 French Open winner, went to Laura Siegemund. Then the German saw no land against Ash Barty for a long time. The Australian was slowly but surely in top form, not letting the local hero win a game in the first round. After less than half an hour, the opening sentence went to Barty.

However, a lot should change in this key at the start of the second round. Barty, who had skipped the entire second half of the season in the previous year due to COVID-19, was confronted with far more resistance on the center court of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in round two than she was able to meet from the local hero in round one.

In the end, however, this did not change anything at the end of this game. Up to the score of 5: 5, Siegemund, who in the meantime was even ahead with break, was able to make the sentence open. Then Barty struck cold and got her quarterfinal ticket with a 7: 5. In this, the world number one waits for the winner of the clash between Jelena Ostapenko and Karolina Pliskova.

Kenin surprisingly out

Estonian Anett Kontaveit is also already in the quarter-finals. And quite surprising. The world rankings-27. In her round of 16 duel with the world number four and Australian Open winner from 2020, the US-American Sofia Kenin, she was in impressive shape and made it into the round of the last eight with 7: 5 and 6: 4.

There is much more positive news from the German point of view, however, from the country's number one, Angelique Kerber. The Bremen woman showed no nakedness in her opening duel with Ekaterine Gorgodze and won the round of 16 ticket with 6: 2 and 6: 2. But now there is a hammer lot waiting in this: The number four of the tournament Elina Svitolina.

Korpatsch missed sensation

A small German sensation was prevented on Wednesday by the Czech Karolina Pliskova. The world number six was stopped by Tamara Korpatsch, who presented herself impressively over long stretches of the game, in three sets. From a domestic point of view, only Anna-Lena Friedsam (round of 16 against Aryna Sabalenka) and Angie Kerber are in the running.
