The German tennis champion Eva Lys (Hamburg) is facing the biggest game of her young career so far after her first win on the WTA professional tour. In Stuttgart, the 20-year-old won her marathon first round game against Viktorija Golubic from Switzerland after more than three hours of play 5: 7, 7: 5, 7: 5. This means she can compete against world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland in the round of 16.

Previously, Kyiv-born Lys, number 342 in the world rankings, had reached the peloton via qualification. In the first round she lost a 4:1 lead, in the second she fought back. Even in the balanced third set, the outsider kept up with Golubic, who was listed in 38th place, and kept his nerve despite missing six break chances in the meantime.

Angelique Kerber from Kiel meets the world number six Anett Kontaveit (Estonia) in her first round match as an unseeded player, and there are four other Germans in Laura Siegemund (Metzingen), Jule Niemeier (Dortmund), Nastasja Schunk (Ludwigshafen) and Tamara Korpatsch (Hamburg). Begin.
