Porsche Tennis Grand Prix: Iga Swiatek cancels the start

Iga Swiatek will not take part in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart this year. The reigning French Open winner needs even more time to prepare for the clay court season.

The fans in Stuttgart would not have seen them anyway due to the corona pandemic, but it is bitter news for the organizers of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix around tournament director Markus Günthardt: The reigning French Open winner Iga Swiatek will not be in Baden- Open Württemberg.

"Unfortunately I won't play in Stuttgart this year. It was not an easy decision, but after much discussion we decided that I needed more time to prepare properly for the tournaments in Madrid, Rome and Paris," wrote the Polish woman on Twitter.

The focus of the 19-year-olds seems to be clearly on defending their title at the French Open. Last year Swiatek clinched the first Grand Slam title of her career in Roland Garros thanks to a sensational run and without losing a set.

After the cancellation of the world number 16, you have to enter the starting field at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. however don't worry. With Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep, Sofia Kenin, Elina Svitolina, Aryna Sabalenka, Karolina Pliskova and defending champion Petra Kvitova, seven top ten players will start in Stuttgart. The starting gun for the WTA 500 tournament will be given on April 19th.
