Karolina Pliskova made the start in the Porsche Arena. The 2018 winner struggled with Tamar Korpatsch for 2:18 hours, finally winning 7: 5, 3: 6 and 6: 3. Pliskova will face Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open winner, in the round of 16.

Angelique Kerber defeated Ekaterine Gorgodze 6: 2 and 6: 2 and now has to deal with a really tough chunk: It goes against Elina Svitolina from the Ukraine. It was not an easy first match, Kerber said in an interview after her victory. It is a pity that there are no spectators in the stands.

World number one Ashleigh Barty will play Laura Siegemund later on Wednesday.
