Petra Kvitova feels right at home in Stuttgart

The fact that Petra Kvitova feels at home on faster surfaces is probably not the best-kept secret in the tennis circuit. The Czechs themselves are to blame for this, for example, when she won the traditionally fast lawn classic at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.

Meanwhile, Kvitova also feels at home on the somewhat slower sand courts of this world. Since 2019, the 31-year-old has scored 16 victories in only four defeats, six of these victories were organized by the former world number two at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. After her triumph two years ago, the Czech is already in the quarter-finals again this year, thanks to a second round victory against Maria Sakkari after the smooth opening success over Jennifer Brady.

Kvitova adjusts game

The world number ten and her opponent, who was nine positions lower, dueled for almost two and a half hours before Kvitova's 6: 3, 3: 6 and 6: 3 success was established. "My service helped me, but we also had great rallies. It was a very difficult, high-quality match," said the two-time Grand Slam winner after the game.

Although she doesn't really see herself as a player for Asche, she has tried in recent years to adapt her game to the conditions on clay, explained Kvitova. In Stuttgart, however, it is easier for her because she loves to play indoors: "It's actually relatively fast and it pays off when I play aggressively."

Great feel-good factor in Stuttgart

But in Stuttgart, the 31-year-old also likes completely different things. "I even enjoyed the slide today," said Kvitova after her victory over Sakkari. Because mobility on sand is also a point that she has been working on in the recent past.

At the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in particular, it would be easy for Kvitova to unpack her best game: "In general, the tournament is just great, even in the bubble." In the quarter-finals against Elina Svitolina or Angelique Kerber on Friday, the Czech will now have to confirm her top form in Stuttgart.
