What Rafael Nadal can do, I've been able to do for a long time - Simona Halep must have thought that when she looked at the Spaniard's final result in his quarter-final match against Cameron Norrie in Barcelona. 6: 1 and 6: 4 were the bare numbers from the perspective of the world number three, a few hours after Nadal, his counterpart on the women's side also left the field with the same result.
It was clear to everyone involved that Halep, number three in the world against Ekaterina Alexandrova, who was not seeded in Stuttgart, would go into the game as the favorite despite two previous defeats. The fact that the Romanian, like Nadal, was only supposed to hand over five games came as a surprise. The 29-year-old now faces Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals. The woman from Belarus beat Stuttgart specialist Anett Kontaveit, who even reached the final in 2019, in a high-class match with 7: 5, 4: 6 and 6: 1. The world number seven turned the match point only five minutes before midnight.
The semifinals of the upper half will be completed by Ashleigh Barty and Elina Svitolina. Both players celebrated a great comeback victory on the day of the quarter-finals .
