Rafael Nadal does not have to worry about a potential entry ban to Australia: The 20-time Grand Slam winner has been vaccinated for some time and at least in this regard could easily take part in the Australian Open. But there is also the fragile physical condition of the 35-year-old, which has often forced him to take breaks in his career and which was also responsible for the early end of the season in 2021.

But for the fans of the Iberian there is definitely reason to be hopeful. As recordings on social media show, Nadal returned to his academy on the tennis court on Tuesday, thus starting his preparation for the upcoming season. Thus, the world number six is well ahead of Dominic Thiem on the schedule, for example, who took the first cautious steps after his wrist injury on Monday, but will "finally hit the balls again" in November.

If you believe the pictures, Nadal is a lot further along. The former world number one has a full three months until the start of the Australian Open, a start seems more than feasible from the current perspective. In the metropolis, the 35-year-old still has a bill to settle anyway. Although he triumphed in Melbourne in 2009, he was repeatedly plagued by injuries at the first Grand Slam event of the year: In 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2021, the Spaniard could not physically draw on the full.

Nadal played his last game on the tour to date at the ATP 500 event in Washington, where he lost to Lloyd Harris in three sets in the round of 16. Then he put a line under the current season due to foot problems. As the current pictures show, possibly a wise decision with regard to the coming season.
