For the past two years, Indian Wells has been worth a trip for Roger Federer - the Swiss won the title in 2017, almost twelve months ago Federer was close to Juan Martin del Potro. With his success in Dubai, the 37-year-old Swiss has now put himself in a good situation - he will be number four in the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament in 2019.

Whether it will be his final appearance in the California desert, it can be speculated. In Dubai, Federer had formally formulated his promise for the coming year; the Maestro was significantly more reserved with regard to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Which is surprising insofar as Federer's long-term contract with his Japanese supplier suggests that the 2008 Olympic gold medalist will also start in Tokyo in 2008.

Del Potro 2019 not in Indian Wells

Indian Wells would be significantly closer to Dubai in time, but tournament director Tommy Haas does not want to jump to conclusions. "We hope that Roger will come to us for many, many years," said longtime German number one in an interview with Desert Sun. "But I remind everyone that this could also be the last time. I don't want to spoil the game, but we have to enjoy those moments with Roger. ”

However, fans in Indian Wells will have to do without one thing in 2019: the defense of Juan Martin del Potro's title. The Argentine had withdrawn after his comeback in Delray Beach because of knee problems.
