With all the joy that the clay court aficionados showed due to Roger Federer's announcement that he would return to the terre battue: Severin Lüthi still formulated a very clear plan in Australia - which Federer will stick to . "Roger will play a clay court tournament before the French Open," said the coach. In numbers: 1.

This of course leaves room for speculation, a few days ago Estoril had already emerged as one of the possible candidates. This choice would not be entirely impossible, especially since Federer stopped at a smaller tournament in Istanbul a few years ago - and promptly left the court there as the winner. The date of Estoril is generally very good, at the same time as Munich, Roland Garros will be playing about a month before the tournament starts.

Geneva would have charm for Roger Federer

More likely, however, is the variant according to which Federer serves to play in one of the two later Masters 1000 tournaments. So in Madrid, where in 2012 he was the only player to build an intimate relationship with the blue sand Ion Tiriacs. Or in Rome. In the Foro Italico, however, the maestro has so far only been able to participate in the final, alongside Monte Carlo one of the few major stations in the tennis circus that Federer is missing from the winning lists.

There is also an extravagant variant - in the week before the French Open. There would be a chance for a home game in Geneva. In the city where the third edition of the Laver Cup, staged by Roger Federer, is to take place in September. The Swiss could do two tasks in one: Promotion for the team competition in autumn and solid warm-up for Roland Garros. Dominic Thiem showed last year that there was no need for a break in the week before the second major of the year: after his success in Lyon, the Lower Austrian made it to the final of the French Open.
