It didn't take long for TV cameras to catch Roger Federer at the recent Laver Cup in Boston. And projected onto the video walls at the Boston TD Garden. The Swiss maestro was sure of the benevolent applause, but Federer would have preferred to enjoy it as an active part of the European team. But even without the great initiator of the team competition, which has been held since 2017, easily won against Team Welt. The 40-year-old Swiss was unthinkable in September 2021, Federer had flown to the USA with crutches after another knee operation.

Whether and when the 20-time Grand Slam champion will ever return to the tennis circuit is an open question. A few days ago, at a sponsor's event, Federer said that he was already planning a comeback. That he is currently listening more closely than ever to what his doctors advise him. And piano is still popular at the moment.

Zverev at all Laver Cups

Now the Laver Cup has a very special meaning for Roger Federer. And according to a tweet that made the rounds on social networks on Thursday, there seems to be legitimate hope that Federer will be part of the team that will compete for Europe at London's O2 Arena from September 23-25, 2022 Butt goes. Incidentally, alongside Rafael Nadal , who was already at the start of the European Laver Cup meetings in Prague 2017 and Geneva 2019. Chicago 2018 and Boston 2021 had missed Nadal, also due to injury.

From a European point of view, it will be interesting to see who can (or wants to) play alongside the two old masters Federer and Nadal: Novak Djokovic was there in 2018, but his agreement with Federer is not considered the best. Alexander Zverev has not missed a Laver Cup so far, Daniil Medvedev gave his premiere in Boston. According to the world rankings, Stefanos Tsitsipas would be the next candidate, but Matteo Berrettini could also make claims. Especially since an interesting question remains: would Federer only come back for a double next to Nadal? Or is the 41-year-old planning a comeback on a grand scale? And maybe even play at the US Open again before that. Federer's doctors will have a say in this.
