The elimination of Ons Jabeur against the Polish Madga Linette came out of nowhere: Jabeur had last triumphed in Madrid and was then only defeated in Rome in the final by Iga Swiatek. However, the Tunisian was the loser against Linette with 6:3, 6:7 (4) and 5:7. A shock. Because if you had trusted a woman to challenge Swiatek, it would have been Jabeur. This is one of the reasons why the organizers gave her the honor of opening the matches on the Philippe-Chatrier court.

Garbine Muguruza, the title holder from 2015, was not quite so unexpected. The Spaniard lost 6: 2, 3: 6 and 4: 6 to the always dangerous Estonian Kaia Kanepi. Kanepi is now considered a real Grand Slam specialist when it comes to top ten players: she was able to win ten out of 21 games.

Sloane Stephens, finalist in 2018, won 5: 7, 6: 4 and 6: 2 after a hard fight against the young German Jule Niemeier.

Here is the women's individual tableau
