Suddenly fan favourite: Djokovic is celebrated on his return

When Novak Djokovic made his comeback, the Serb was enthusiastically cheered on by the fans. But not only from the Serbian fans, for whom their "Nole" had never lost any of its saint status. But also from the more neutral fans. This is mainly due to the clever tactics of the top favorite off the field.

When Novak Djokovic gave his winning interview shortly after midnight, one could almost get the impression that he didn't win the first round but the entire tournament. Each of his answers was celebrated so frenetically. When looking at the audience, the huge telephoning of the fans was not surprising. A lot of Serbian flags could be seen on the stands. A large Serbian community traditionally lives in Melbourne, as could be seen on the streets of the city during his vaccination drama last year. In any case, their celebration was planned. However, it was also noticeable that the rest of the on-site observers were also very warm and benevolent towards the victory. Again, that wasn't so clear.

Just a few days ago, tournament director Craig Tiley issued a ban on booing for the tournament. He didn't want to be carried away into justifying this decision specifically with fear of negative emotions surrounding Novak Djokovic, but it became clear: Tiley is not sure how the fans will receive "Nole". Now that seems clear. In no way hostile, but friendly to euphoric.

Djokovic contributed to the relaxation

The more relaxed corona situation in Australia and around the world probably plays a role in this. It is difficult to imagine that an unvaccinated athlete would keep the world in suspense. But in 2022 that was a reality and the epicenter was Melbourne.

But Djokovic also contributed to the relaxation. In the last few years he has always liked to make controversial and provocative statements, but he acted very diplomatically in the run-up to the tournament and found the right tone. "It was very emotional for me. I didn't know what kind of reception I would get. How it would be after everything that had happened in the last year. That's why I'm all the more grateful for the love and support I'm experiencing here," said the Serb before the tournament.

And he was also forgiving of the clear victory (6: 3, 6: 4, 6: 0) in the first round against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena: "I could only dream of such a mood and such a reception. Thank you. I am so happy to be back."

It seems like Novak Djokovic also chose the right tactics off the field this time.
