Surprise! Up to 1,000 fans on the Rome final days

That comes as a surprise: As it became known on Friday, the Roman city government will let up to 1,000 fans take part in the final phase of the combined women's and men's tournament in the Foro Italico in Rome on Sunday and Monday.

If that is not an incentive for all remaining participants in the field of the ATP Masters 1000 and WTA Premier 5 tournaments: The semi-finals on Sunday and the finals on Monday can take place in front of spectators. Not in front of a full house, this is probably impossible in times of Corona, but at least up to 1,000 fans can participate in the action live.

The combined event was designed to be spectatorless from the start, similar to the US Open, which ended on Sunday in New York City. Last week, 1,950 spectators at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel already had the chance to watch the matches in the stadium. And next week, the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Hamburg will be played in front of more than 2,500 fans.

In Paris, meanwhile, they are going back step by step: The original plan to let 11,500 fans on the system at the French Open, which begins on September 27, could not be kept in view of the increasing numbers of infections in France. There are currently 5,000 observers, all of them on the Philippe-Chatrier Court.
