Alexander Zverev had a solid 2020 season

Alexander Zverev celebrated the most liberating victory of the whole year a few days ago in a courtroom in London - with the termination of the contract with his now finally former manager Patricio Apey. But we want to turn to the sporty side here: And there is first of all the first-time entry into a final of a major, at the US Open. And also in a semi-final at the Australian Open. And the flawless lecture during two weeks in the deserted Lanxess Arena in Cologne.

But, as Zverev put it so nicely in one of his press conferences at the ATP Finals: In order for there to be a rivalry with Dominic Thiem, he would have to win a match against the Austrian again. In the final in New York City, Zverev was very close, the first two sets were the best of his entire year. In the end, however, Thiem was in front again, as in the semifinals in Melbourne.

Zverev loses against Djokovic at the ATP Finals

At the French Open, Zverev's lecture against Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 raised a few questions, such as how sick the German number one really got into the game. The qualification for the ATP Finals was never in question, the finals in Paris-Bercy only reinforced Alexander Zverev's claim to be one of the very best in his genre.

At the farewell performance in London, Zverev started weakly against Daniil Medvedev - and had to admit defeat to Novak Djokovic in the decisive match for entry into the semi-finals. The new coach David Ferrer was there, the tasks for the Spanish fighter are obvious: to convey Zverev the aggressiveness with which he dominated Thiem at the US Open in the initial phase.

Achilles heel second serve

The serve is still Alexander Zverev's great strength, 422 aces and 83 percent won service games speak a clear language. The Achilles heel, however, remains the second serve, which only exists in phases: 220 double errors are a massive mark. After all: Alexander Zverev, who winters as number seven in the world, was able to fend off 61 percent of the break chances of his opponents.
