For Maria Sakkari , things are still going well at the WTA 1000 tournament in Doha: The sixth in the world rankings is in Qatar without losing a set in the semifinals. In the round of the last eight, the Greek won 6:3 and 6:3 against the only 17-year-old Cori Gauff. In the semifinals she meets Aryna Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek.
Getting into the semi-finals came as a surprise for Sakkari after stomach problems in the run-up to their opening match: "Three hours before the game I left the hospital and said to myself, 'Okay, I'll play and see what I can do.' Three days later I'm in the semifinals."
Anett Kontaveit is also already in the semifinals. After a balanced start, the Estonian defeated Ons Jabeur 6:4 and 6:1. She will face Garbine Muguruza or Jelena Ostapenko on Friday.
