Martic opened the game on the Campo Centrale with her game against Jessica Pegula, prevailing 7: 5 and 6: 4. The Croatian has so far defeated Shelby Rogers, Kristina Mladenovic and Nadia Podoroska before Pegula. Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, ensured Naomi Osaka's next early death.
It was much more exciting in the second quarter-finals. Karolina Pliskova, 2019 winner in Rome and last year forced to give up as a finalist due to an injury against Simona Halep, won against Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open winner, 4-6, 7-5 and 7-6 ( 1).
The two outstanding matches of the quarter-finals will be played by world number one Ashleigh Barty against US teenager Cori Gauff and Elina Svitolina against Iga Swiatek.
