"I don't want to lie. I was worried before my return," said the four-time Grand Slam winner from Japan before the start of the tournament in Roland Garros.

The 24-year-old, who didn't want to attend the obligatory press conferences last year and finally didn't appear in her second round match after public discussions, was now worried about how she would be received in the French capital. And whether she is able to handle awkward confrontations with people who may have hurt her with her behavior.

"Overall, everyone has reacted quite positively, I think," said Osaka, who took a break from Roland Garros last year until the Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental health. The former number one has slipped to 38th place in the world rankings.

In Paris, Osaka meets the American Amanda Anisimova (from 11 a.m., here live ) in the first round, against whom she lost in three sets at the Australian Open.
