Looking at the ATP live rankings can be great fun. That is when you watch young, up-and-coming players walking through the institutions, like Sebastian Baez and Holger Rune last week, who suddenly found themselves among the top 50 players in the world after their successes in Estoril and Munich. However, when the odds aren't quite so favorable, the live rankings also provide hard truths. Such as for Dominic Thiem: He is currently in 160th place there. And thus only the third best Austrian behind Dennis Novak (146) and Jurij Rodionov (155).

Thiem may not care about the right to start for the tournaments in the coming weeks. In Rome, the US Open champion of 2020 will assert his second (of a total of nine) protected rankings, should Thiem ask for a wildcard somewhere, the respective organizers will hardly resist. Thiem can certainly borrow from his Monday conqueror Andy Murray. Like Thiem, the Scot is a welcome guest and can basically play anywhere he wants.

Thiem in the role of the outsider

But of course the loss of 360 points from Madrid in 2021 is already a turning point. Even if Thiem's entry into the semi-finals, like last year, was considered unlikely from the start. Against the very snappy Murray, Thiem relied more on his forehand, which failed him with 24 mistakes, not only in the crucial phases. A few of these misses came on the return, also one facet of his game that will only come back to Thiem.

Rome is coming up next week, a first match win after the comeback in the Foro Italico would do Dominic Thiem good. After all, the fall in the world rankings makes one thing clear: From now on, Thiem can attack from the role of the outsider until further notice.
