Andy Murray: "Maybe I played my last match in Davis Cup"

Whilst Andy Murray remains extremely passionate about competing on the team, the veteran could face a tight future with more appearances for the British Davis Cup team.

At least on Sunday Andy Murray managed to end a difficult Davis Cup weekend on a conciliatory note. The Scot, who initially played in pairs against the USA and the Netherlands (and trailed by a hair's breadth, which ultimately sealed the two defeats in the international match and thus elimination in the group stage), celebrated a secure individual victory against Dmitry Popko in the final group game against Kazakhstan.

An important achievement, as Murray stressed afterwards: "I was very excited to play today. I wanted to win to thank the fans for the support they gave me. We experienced an incredible atmosphere these days , which shows that we love tennis in Scotland and have the ability to fill stadiums," said the Scot, who is obviously hurt by the end. "It's really a shame that we couldn't qualify."

Murray faces uncertain Davis Cup future

However, Murray is unsure about his personal future in the British Davis Cup team: "I understand that it is becoming more and more difficult to play, and when I was a game away from winning, I realized that I might have my last points in the Davis Cup games," explained Murray, who is currently ranked 43rd in the ATP world rankings and is therefore only the third best Briton in the ranking.

This is also where the difficulty lies when it comes to further singles appearances in the British jersey: "After the results we achieved in doubles this week, I don't know how the captain will decide on my role in the team. There are also top-class ones Players who deserve to play before me, but I'd like to be there for a long time."
