The reasons for Alexander Zverev's rather modest appearance at the ATP Cup have been sufficiently spread over the past few days by those two men who were closest to German number one alongside father Alexander senior in the days of Brisbane: Zverev was simply with too few training sessions Coming to Australia, ATP Cup team boss Boris Becker and Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann said in unison, albeit on different occasions.

The tough training that Zverev put in after the defeats against Alex de Minaur, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Denis Shapovalov brought the German number one to a major in the semifinals for the first time. As is well known, Dominic Thiem ended in Melbourne. After that, Zverev took a few days off with his girlfriend, there weren't that many after the ATP finals in London in the fall - because Zverev had toured South America with Roger Federer and also had to have a minor eye surgery in New York City undergo

Zverev 2019 in Acapulco in the final

Now it should go on in Acapulco, the draw was not bad with the German number one. Zverev opens today against Jason Jung, who at least speaks for the fact that he played through qualification and therefore brings with him game practice. On the other hand, the 30-year-old American is in the ATP world ranking beyond the top 100, Alexander Zverev in seventh place. On the other hand, Zverev was able to observe from afar in Rio de Janeiro last week that paper form doesn't always speak the whole truth, where buddy Thiem versus Gianluca Mager surprisingly flew out of the tournament.

Alexander Zverev comes back to Acapulco with passable memories, but a year ago he had surprisingly lost in the final against Nick Kyrgios. The 2019 path to the final was righteous, in the current edition the first test in the quarterfinals with Félix Auger-Aliassime could wait. The Canadian, however, had to finalize in Marseille on Sunday after playing in Rotterdam the previous week until Sunday. So not a bad prospect for Alexander Zverev, who is once again allowed to build on double family connections in Acapulco: Brother Mischa was granted a wildcard for the single, in doubles the Zverevs had their first appearance together: On Monday the brothers played against Nicholas Monroe and Jackson Withrow from the United States. And won safely with 6: 3 and 6: 3.
