Peter Gojowczyk was certainly looking forward to his first round match against Nick Kyrgios in Atlanta. After qualifying, the German would have been Kyrgios' first opponent after his entry into the Wimbledon final. Instead, Gojowczyk faced Adrian Mannarino, a lucky loser. Mannarino seized the moment and won 6:3 and 7:6 (7).

Because Kyrgios had to cancel the individual at short notice due to problems with the patellar tendon. And that after he had already reached the second round in doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis on Monday by beating Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

"I'm extremely devastated that I can't play tonight," explained Kyrgios in Atlanta. "I've won this tournament before and am currently playing the best tennis of my career." He was very disappointed, but: "I still have hope that I might be able to continue playing with Thanasi later in the week." The next opponent in doubles would be Gonzalo Escobar and Hunter Reese.
