At the side of his semi-final conqueror in single, Diego Schwartzman, Thiem lost 1-6, 1-6 to the top seeded duo Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos.
Schwartzman had previously lost his individual final against Marco Cecchinato 1-6, 2-6.
The 33-year-old Horacio Zeballos, on the other hand, won his eleventh double tournament at the ATP level by winning his home tournament, while the 35-year-old Gonzalez won the fifth ATP double title in his career. For Zeballos, it was also the third double victory in Buenos Aires: in 2010 he won alongside Sebastian Prieto, in 2018 together with Andres Molteni.
Dominic Thiem is now headed straight to Rio de Janeiro: Lichtenwörther is top-notch and meets Laslo Djere at the start.
