Nonetheless, the ATP 250 event in Cagliari was another great test of talent for the young Italian hopeful Lorenzo Musetti. And that for two reasons. At the start of the tournament, the 19-year-old had almost dismantled a disappointing Dennis Novak, in the second round the man from Genoa then showed strong nerves. And defeated the number one of the tournament Dan Evans in the tiebreak of the third set - after defending match points.

But now this run has come to an end. In the quarterfinals, Musetti had to admit defeat to clay court specialist Laslo Djere. The two-time ATP Tour title holder proved his staying power in the third set with 6: 2 and now meets Nikoloz Basilashvili, who took the German Jan-Lennard Struff out of the competition in a competitive game in three sets. The Warsteiner had made it to the quarterfinals with victories over Liam Broady and Jaoa Susa.

Sonego beats Hanfmann

Meanwhile, the second remaining German in the Cagliari main field was also the final destination in the round of the last eight. Yannick Hanfmann, who had a strong week of tennis with victories over Marco Ceccinato and the American Tommy Paul, failed in the quarter-finals in a hard-fought match against last year's Djokovic conqueror, local hero Lorenzo Sonego.

However, the German had already served the match win in the second set, but ultimately had to admit defeat in the tie-break. In the third sentence, the 29-year-old saw no more country. Lorenzo Sonego serves in the semifinals against the American Taylor Fritz, who had the upper hand against Aljaz Bedene in the round of the last eight.
