"I do not care who it is against. In the final in a German tournament, of course I want to be the winner", Alexander Zverev said after his contested two-set win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to the WDR. Now it has become the Canadian Felix-Auger-Aliassime, who surprisingly beat the number two of the tournament, Roberto Bautista Agut, in three sets.
Zverev leads in head-to-head
Auger-Aliassime got off to a better start into the match and was able to hold an early break to 6: 3 in the first round. In set two, the 20-year-old slacked off a bit, an opportunity that the experienced Bautista Agut also knew how to use and was able to equalize with 6: 1. In the third decision set, it was an early break again that tipped the scales in favor of Felix Auger-Aliassime. After almost two hours, the Canadian used his first match ball.
In the final in Cologne, Alexander Zverev is befitting the big favorite. The German leads head-to-head with Felix Auger-Aliassime 2-0 - and was also able to win the two duels that the two contested in the course of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown during the COVID-19-related interruption of the tour decide. For Felix Auger-Aliassime it is already the sixth final on the ATP tour, but the Canadian is still waiting for his first title.
