Jannik Sinner: Number one after Paris?

Jannik Sinner has worked his way close to the top of the world rankings in recent months. And he will be at the top in just a few weeks. The cancellation of Rome won't change that.

Changes at the top of the world rankings are always something very special. Especially when a player takes over the top position who has not previously held the top spot in the tennis world. Jannik Sinner could soon be about to make this debut.

This is made possible by a simple calculation in tennis arithmetic. Last year, Jannik Sinner, who was unable to compete in the quarter-finals in Madrid due to injury, was eliminated in the second round against Daniel Altmaier and thus only took 45 points with him from the clay court Grand Slam. Novak Djokovic won the title and now has 2000 points to defend.

Djokovic and Sinner in Paris with different cushions

At 1130 points, the gap between Djokovic and Sinner is a decent cushion, but even a theoretical defeat in the final would mean a loss of 800 points for Djokovic. Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, can only gain.

Beforehand, both players in Rome did not have a large cushion to defend with 180 (Djokovic) and 90 (Sinner) points. The battle for the number one spot will definitely be reignited in Paris. However, due to Jannik Sinner's cancellation, Novak Djokovic could increase his provisional cushion in the Italian capital.
