Alejandro Tabilo started on the Campo Centrale as if semi-final matches at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament were a familiar routine for him. In fact, the left-hander was in the semi-finals of an event of this category for the first time ever. But Tabilo was still cheeky, didn't let Alexander Zverev get into a rhythm, kept throwing in stops - and won the first set 6-1 after just under half an hour.

In the second act, things got tricky for the first time in the seventh game - but Zverev confidently fended off a break point from Tabilo. After that, the returners had no more work - a tiebreak had to decide. Zverev started with a double fault, but got the mini-break back to 1:2. At 3:3, the sides changed for the first time. Alexander Zverev no longer took any risks - and could rely on Tabilo making a mistake. After 1:45 hours of play, the set was tied.

After that, Zverev was clearly the better player, breaking Tabilo to make it 2-1 and 4-1. And ultimately moved safely into his third final in the Eternal City. In 2017, the Hamburg native won his first 1000-game title against Novak Djokovic.

On Sunday, the German number one is definitely the favorite: Neither Tommy Paul nor Nicolas Jarry have yet reached a final at a Masters tournament. But hey, Alejandro Tabilo showed for almost two sets that this doesn't necessarily have to play a role.
