The last act of the ATP Cup felt "a bit pointless" for Alexander Zverev. "Today it was relatively difficult mentally, we play a match for more or less nothing," said the Olympic champion after he suffered his first defeat of the year in a 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 against Felix Auger-Aliassime .

Even before the start of the final group game of the team competition, which was ultimately lost 2-1 to Canada, the German team had no chance of the semi-finals due to the success of Great Britain against the USA (2-1). Zverev was annoyed: "With the team we were here with, we would have had a chance to win the ATP Cup."

But the German number one will quickly look ahead to the even bigger goal of the Australian Open, which will start on January 17th. Zverev will once again go on the hunt for his first Grand Slam title and can build on the "generally relatively positive" first week in Australia.

Zverev is not very motivated

He didn't feel very motivated against Auger-Aliassime, but he had designed his two singles previously against Cameron Norrie (Great Britain) and Taylor Fritz (USA) convincingly for himself and built on his strong form with which he at the end of the year at the ATP Triumphed in the finals in Turin.

Zverev can be expected in the fight for the title, and German number two Jan-Lennard Struff also wants to play a good tournament. The Warsteiner had to fight for the world number 14 in a duel with Canada. Denis Shapovalov was beaten 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 4, 3: 6 despite an appealing performance. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz ensured the point in doubles. "It was a lot of fun in the team again, it's a shame that the time is over," said Struff.
