Not Andrey Rublev? No problem. The Russian team survived the group stage at the ATP Cup 2022 in Sydney even in the absence of number two. In a repeat of last year's final, Daniil Medvedev and Roman Safiullin won the decisive double against the Italians Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 6-4 and 10-5. Russia is now playing either against Great Britain or Canada.

Italy took the lead with Sinner's 7: 6 (6) and 6: 3 against Safiuliin 1: 0, Medvedev then won the top duel against Berrettini 6: 2, 6: 7 (5) and 6: 4. The world number two left a somewhat exhausted impression, even in doubles Medvedev often used the breaks to feed himself.

Russia versus Canada or Great Britain

The Russians had started the ATP Cup with a severely decimated team: Both Rublev, Aslan Karatsev and Evgeny Donskoy were canceled for a short time after positive corona findings. With a substitute Safiullin, however, it was enough to win against France, Australia and now Italy. Should Canada now win against Germany, it will play in the semifinals against Denis Shapovalov and Félix Auger-Aliassime. If Germany won, Britain would wait.

The second semifinals will be played by Spain with Roberto Bautista-Agut and Pablo Carreno Busta against the Poles with Hubert Hurkacz and Kamil Majchrzak.
