With the tailwind of Dennis Novak's terrific comeback victory behind him, Dominic Thiem made Austria's success against Argentina perfect after the second individual. Thiem defeated Diego Schwartzman for the sixth time in the eighth match, this time 6: 3 and 7: 6 (3). For the number four in the world it was the first success at the newly created team event after the defeat against Borna Coric, Schwartzman had to accept the second bankruptcy after the defeat against the Polem Hubert Hurkacz.

After a clear first round for the favorite, both players had two major problems keeping their serve at the start of the set. Only after four breaks in a row did Thiem make it 3-2 with his own serve. In the ninth game, the Austrian showed his best side in terms of fairness: Schwartzman no longer had a challenge, so Thiem had the Hawkeye called up at his own expense, which revised a decision to his disadvantage. However, this had no influence on the immediately following course of the game. A tie-break had to make the decision.

Thiem wins in the tie-break

Thiem made a mini break to 2: 0, Schwartzman defended himself, at 3: 3 the sides were changed. Much to the delight of the predominantly Argentinian fans in the very well-filled arena in Sydney, over which the roof remained closed on Monday. An inside-out forehand shot and two strong serves brought Thiem three match balls. And Dominic Thiem also transformed the first. The winner was naturally satisfied after the match - but emphasized that not everything would have been bad in the match against Coric.

In the final doubles, Oliver Marach and Jürgen Melzer compete for Austria. The two veterans lost their first match in the ATP Cup on Saturday against Croatia in two sets. Marach and Melzer meet Maximo Gonzales and Andres Molteni.
