Ugu Humbert caused a surprise in Sydney

Daniil Medvedev hadn't expected that: The world number two led against Ugo Humbert 7: 6 (5) and 3: 0 - and still let the victory be taken. Humbert won the second set 7: 5 and won round three after almost three hours of play with a flawless tiebreaker. Final score: 6: 7 (5), 7: 5 and 7: 6 (2) for France.

So it's 1: 1 after the individual games. Because Roman Safiullin had asserted himself at the beginning against Arthur Rinderknech with 2: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 3. Safiullin only slipped into the Russian team after Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev canceled. In doubles, the French with Fabrice Martin and Edouard Roger-Vasselin have to be favorites.

Fritz suggests Auger aliases

Group C, which in addition to Germany only uses English as the official language, also delivered its first little surprise. Because the USA could look forward to victory against Canada after the two individual games. However: Denis Shapovalov, the Canadian number two, has not yet been able to compete in the individual after surviving the corona infection. Substitute Brayden Schnur had no chance against John Isner at 1: 6 and 3: 6.

Things were already more exciting in Sydney in the top duel between Taylor Fritz and Félix Auger-Aliassime. Fritz won after a playing time of 2:27 hours 6: 7 (6), 6: 4 and 6: 4.

Both nations competed in doubles with their best single players, and Shapovalov also made his first appearance. The result could not change the success of the Americans in the neighborhood duel. Fritz / Isner took this point with them with the 6: 4 and 6: 4.

Germany opened later on Sunday against Great Britain (live on Sky and on ServusTV). Jan-Lennard Struff meets Daniel Evans. Alexander Zverev plays against Cameron Norrie.
