The pressure on Oliver Marach and Jürgen Melzer was not quite as great after the two individual victories of Dennis Novak against Guido Pella and Dominic Thiem against Diego Schwartzman. Nevertheless: The clear 3-0 win against Argentina gave Austria the chance to continue playing after the group phase in Sydney. The quarter-finals will be held there on Thursday, with the six group winners and the top two. At the start the team of Thomas Muster Croatia was defeated 0-3. The Croatians also won their second match against Poland, this time 2-1.
In any case, Marach and Melzer started much better than against Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic on Saturday. After a smoothly won first set, the two veterans quickly made a break in round two, but had to fend off two break chances at the score of 3: 2 and serve Melzer, after which they gave three options for the early decision.
Austria plays its last preliminary round match against Poland in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday (live at 0:00 a.m. on ServusTV and in our live ticker).
