Setback for Alexander Zverev, defeat for the German team: The Olympic tennis champion lost his final and ultimately meaningless individual at the ATP Cup. The 24-year-old from Hamburg lost to Canada's top player Felix Auger-Aliassime on Thursday 4: 6, 6: 4, 3: 6 and could not prevent the German team's second defeat in the third group game.

Before the final double it was 0: 2, even Jan-Lennard Struff had to admit defeat. The Warsteiner was subject to the world number 14. Denis Shapovalov 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 4, 3: 6 despite an appealing performance. The German team had no chance of the semi-finals even before the last group game due to a victory by Great Britain against the USA (2: 1).

For the German tennis professionals, the ATP Cup serves primarily as preparation for the Australian Open, which begins on January 17th. And Zverev, who wants to make the next attempt at his first Grand Slam victory in Melbourne, still has room for improvement. Auger-Aliassime, on the other hand, was able to secure group victory and thus the semi-finals for Canada.

The German team had lost their opening duel with Great Britain at the ATP Cup despite a sovereign success from Zverev, against the USA the DTB team managed their only victory.
