Can Daniil Medvedev be at the front again in 2020?

Daniil Medvedev could write one of the most exciting stories in the coming year. The Russian quickly played among the ten best professionals in the world, reaching the final of the US Open and winning two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Cincinnati and Shanghai. However, experts are now curious to see whether Medvedev can confirm these achievements in the coming year, perhaps even go one step further.

In the current week, Medvedev is one of the eight players who are fighting for a lot of money in Saudi Arabia. The 23-year-old has so far been able to convince and is in the final against Fabio Fognini after a clear victory against David Goffin. An intermediate goal seems to have been achieved. "It is important to me to see how good my form is in the middle of the preparation," Medvedev told the UbiTennis portal earlier this week. “To see in which areas I have to improve, to work even harder with my team. Of course I have very high expectations after my last season, but first I have to stay fresh and look from match to match. ”

Medvedev tired in the final stages of 2019

In fact, the Muscovite, who lives in Monte Carlo, ran out of air at the end of the season. At the ATP Finals in London he lost for the first time ever to Stefanos Tsitsipas, against Rafael Nadal two days later he gave a 5: 1 lead in the third set. In the final account, however, is fifth place in the ATP world rankings. So the way to the top is not far anymore.

“I've been thinking about number one since I was six. But I'm not obsessed with it, ”continued Medvedev. "If I would be 40 years old and number two in my best career ranking, it wouldn't change my life completely. But of course: If you work hard and play a lot of tournaments, you want to get the best possible ranking. ”
