The ATP Tour 500 tournament in Rotterdam this week underlined that a strong seeding list does not necessarily have to lead to a prominent semifinal: Only Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev made it to the quarter-finals from among the eight best-ranked players in the Netherlands . In Doha, the favorites have done better in recent years. A look at the list of winners in Qatar underscores this.
When the event started in 1993, Boris Becker struck once, followed by two successes by Stefan Edberg. In the recent past, the big four have each won the trophy in Doha at least once: Novak Djokovic in 2016 and 2017, Rafael Nada l in 2014, Andy Murray in 2008 and 2009 and Roger Federer in 2005, 2006 and 2011. The Swiss will certainly be this year generate the main attention - also because neither Djokovic, Nadal nor Murray will be at the start in Doha.
Andrey Rublev is still registered for this. However, the defending champion is still in Rotterdam. On the other hand, Alexander Bublik, who lost the final in Singapore last Sunday and won against Alexander Zverev in Rotterdam just three days later, showed that a spontaneous trip halfway around the world does not necessarily have to be an obstacle to a good performance.
Incidentally, the 2018 champion will not be there: Gael Monfils withdrew for personal reasons.
