Jürgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin lost their first match in London

It was only at the last minute that Jürgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin bought their ticket for the ATP Finals in London by reaching the finals in Sofia. In the British capital, the greatest possible challenge should wait right from the start, with Mate Pavic and Bruno Soares, Melzer / Roger-Vasselin started off with the world's number one.

A class difference could not be seen at the beginning, however, Melzer and Roger-Vasselin kept up with the top seeded and sent the first set into a tiebreak. In this, the Austrian and the French initially gambled away a mini break twice, but from 5: 6 onwards, Melzer in particular showed his great class. The 39-year-old, who will end his active career after the Australian Open, played three sensational points en suite and thus helped his team to win the set.

Match tie-break decides

Pavic and Soares didn't let that disturb them, however, made two quick breaks in the second round and took a 5-0 lead. A little later, the Croat and his Brazilian partner had won section number two 6-1.

So a match tie-break had to bring the decision. In this Melzer / Roger-Vasselin managed the first mini-break, but Pavic / Soares answered in the style of real champions and gained a 7: 3 lead. The two no longer gave it up, in the end there was a 6: 7 (6), 6: 1 and 10: 4 success for the top seeders.

Melzer / Roger-Vasselin will meet John Peers and Michael Venus on Wednesday. The two had lost in the day session against Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6: 7 (2) and 5: 7.
