Honor where honor is due: And so the pairing in the men's doubles at the 2021 Wimbledon tournament on Tuesday was still allowed to compete in the quarter-finals on the covered court 1. Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic had with the two veterans Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo had his hands full, but finally won 3: 6, 4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6 (4) and 6: 4. In the semifinals it is either against Juan Sebastian Cabal or Robert Farah or Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram. Regardless of the outcome of this match, it is already clear: Mektic and Pavic will be part of the first ATP Finals in Turin in November 2021.
Mektic was already at the finals alongside Alexander Peya in 2018 and won the last edition in London last year with Wesley Koolhof. Pavic was able to qualify three times: 2017 and 2018 with Oliver Marach, 2020 with Bruno Soares.
And well deserved: The two Croatians have won seven titles so far this year, the match record of 46: 5 wins speaks volumes. What is still missing, however: the triumph with a major. At the Australian Open it was surprisingly over against Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek, the French Open had to skip Mektic / Pavic because of a positive corona test. At Wimbledon it should finally work for the duo, who have only been playing together since the beginning of the year. The prospects are not bad: Because the number-two pair of the tournament, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, had to withdraw early in the competition due to injury.
