Olympic champion Alexander Zverev put himself in a good starting position in the fight for the semifinals at the ATP Finals - but benefited from Matteo Berrettini's task. The world number three led on Sunday evening in Turin in his first preliminary round match against the Wimbledon finalists 7: 6 (9: 7), 1: 0, before the Italian first had his lateral abdominal muscles treated and gave up shortly afterwards.

Zverev, who won the season finale of the eight best of the year in 2018, took the lead in the red group with defending champion Daniil Medvedev. The US Open champion from Russia, the next opponent of the German number one on Tuesday, had defeated the Polish outsider Hubert Hurkacz 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 3, 6: 4. The two best players of the two preliminary round groups qualify for the semi-finals.
