Especially the Austrian tennis fans have fond memories of Hugo Gaston: The French left-hander had brought Dominic Thiem to the brink of defeat in the round of 16 of the French Open 2020, annoying the then newly crowned US Open champion with one stop ball after the other. Thiem then had to pay tribute to the many sprints against Gaston in the quarter-finals against Diego Schwartzman, losing to his Argentine friend in five sets.

Hugo Gaston has been a little quieter in recent months, now he is facing his greatest career triumph: The 20-year-old from Toulouse won the semifinals of the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Gstaad against Laslo Djere with 3: 6, 6 : 3 and 6: 3. Gaston is definitely certain that his ranking, which is currently 155, will improve.

But he goes into the final as an outsider: Casper Ruud took the momentum of his tournament victory from Bastad to Gstaad and finished the amazing successful run of the qualifier Vit Koprina in the semifinals on Saturday. The Czech had thrown tournament favorite Denis Shapovalov out of the competition, but against Ruud he lacked the strength for the next coup at 3: 6 and 0: 6.
