This time the tension factor for Roger Federer was limited: if the Swiss had to struggle the full distance against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and against Roberto Bautista-Agut, Federer surely beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert with 6 in the second semi-final of the day: 3 and 6: 3. In the final, David Goffin is waiting, who finished Matteo Berrettini's success run 7: 6 (4) and 6: 3.

Federer started with a break, it only took 29 minutes to get the first set under lock and key. And at the beginning of round two, the favorite also had three break chances - which Herbert was able to fend off. The Frenchman had benefited from defending champion Borna Coric in the quarterfinals. And now found the match better. However, only as a server - Herbert had nothing to report in the return game.

The decision was made in the seventh game of the second set, in which Federer used his fourth break chance. After exactly one hour of play, the record champion from Halle had his first match ball, which he used with a forehand ball. And thus moved into the final of the tournament for which he signed a (tennis) lifetime contract for the 13th time.

In direct comparison with David Goffin, Federer leads with 7: 1 victories. The Belgian could only win the semifinals at the ATP final in 2017 in three sets.
