Dominic Thiem can still concentrate on training at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid, as one of the top eight seeded Austrian number one got a bye at the start. At least Thiem now knows who he could prepare for as the first opponent: either the Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar or the American Marco Giron.

Both had to go through the qualification mills, so Thiem's opponent will already have three matches, but also wins, in their bones. Against Andujar, currently at position 80 in the ATP charts, Thiem has played three times and won just as often. The last encounter with the 35-year-old was in summer 2019 in the quarter-finals in Kitzbühel. Thiem won 7: 6 (4) and 6: 4 on the way to the title.

The hand against Giron, number 92 in the world, is still unwritten. The American first won a thriller against Thiago Monterio in qualifying, but benefited from the abandonment of his opponent Yoshihito Nishioka in his second match.

By the way, Italy's newcomer Lorenzo Musetti fell by the wayside in qualifying. The 19-year-old had no chance in the 4: 6 and 2: 6 against Carlos Taberner.
