Hugo Gaston and the French audience. This story began at the French Open 2020 - and has now been continued at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris-Bercy. The French youngster with the unorthodox style of play, the affinity for the stop and the idiosyncratic forehand technique plays into the hearts of his compatriots - and knows how to get them carried away.

So in the duel with teenager Alcarzaz and also in the match against the number two of the tennis world, Daniil Medvedev. Even the newly crowned US Open winner was impressed at times by the cauldron in the French capital and was already standing with his back to the wall in the first round. After a double error by the Russian, Gaston grabbed the first break of the match and had three set balls in a row when he served. All of them in promising rallies. And yet the 21-year-old was unable to use any.

Medvedev ice cold in sentence two

Daniil Medvedev broke back and sent the match into a tie-break, which the 25-year-old was able to win 9: 7 after many sensational rallies, great drama and a little help from Hugo Gaston. That gave the world number two boost, Medvedev started like the fire brigade in set two and quickly took the lead with a double break. The 25-year-old couldn’t let it go. Although Gaston still managed a rebreak, it shouldn’t be enough for the French anymore. With 7: 6 (7) and 6: 4, the Russian finally made the semi-finals perfect.

There Daniil Medvedev is now waiting for the winner of the last quarter-finals of the day between Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud (with us in the live ticker). The second semifinal has already been decided, Novak Djokovic (clear) and Hubert Hurkacz (close) bought their ticket for the semifinals in the afternoon.
