Tennis Australia did well to schedule the matches on Friday as early as possible: The rain that had been announced in the afternoon meant the interruption of all those tournaments that were not scheduled on the covered courts in Melbourne. And that was all except the matches at the ATP Cup and the women's Yarra River Classic.
In the men's category, after a long break, all games could be brought dry: First, Borna Coric prevailed at the Murray River Open against local hero Nick Kyrgios 6: 3 and 6: 4. No surprise: Kyrgios, who said he had stopped training for several months, had already appeared to be unsettled in his first two appearances against Alexandre Muller and Harry Bourchier. Coric lost to Daniel Evans immediately afterwards.
At the Great Ocean Road Open, youngster Carlos Alcaraz was defeated by the Brazilian veteran Thiago Monteiro 6: 7 (3) and 3: 6. Alcaraz had knocked the tournament favorite David Goffin out of the tableau in round two. Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, made it into the semi-finals with two wins, as did Karen Khachanov. The Russian will also play against Sinner in the semifinals on Saturday. Monteiro and Stefano Travaglia contest the second semifinals.
